Upcoming changes - rates, auto-topup, service change

Postby Dark Scorpion on 27 May 2007, 15:31

Straight from Virgin Mobile's website:

Starting on June 24th, 2007, if you're on the Minute 2 Minute plan or the 25 cent per minute plan your new rate will be 30 cents per minute.

If you're on one of our monthly rate plans then you won't be affected as long as you stay on the plan. If your monthly payment doesn't go through, then your per minute rate will be 30 cents. Make it easy - hook up a credit card to your account and make sure you never have to worry about topping up before your monthly payment date.

Great. At first it was .25 per minute for the first five minutes, then plain .25, and now .30 - what's the next step - 0.40?

Auto Top Up will now has even more top up power all in one great feature! To make sure you don't have to spend time keeping track of expiry dates, not only will Auto Top Up add funds to your account when your balance drops below the level you've already chosen, but it will also top up your account 1 day before your balance is set to expire! That way you never need to worry about losing what's sitting in your balance while you keep Auto Top Up active.

Say you've set up your account to add $25 dollars automatically every time your balance drops below the $10 threshold. Kickback and relax because you have 90 days to use that $25 before it expires. If your balance is higher than $10 when the 90th day arrives then no need to sweat because we've got you covered. Auto Top Up will always go into action the day before expiry no matter the balance. So an additional $25 would be added on the 89th day even if you haven't gone below the $10 threshold yet. Your phone will always have cash ready to use when you need it.

If there is an error with your credit card and we're unable to top up your account the day before your expiry then the balance will drop to $0. But with the new improved Auto Top Up we will keep trying to top you up for the next 30 days, so you can get your phone up and running again as soon as possible. Easy as that!

This change is pretty much useless if you don't use the auto top-up

Call Connection

On March 5, 2007, we're changing the way we charge for connected calls that you make from your Virgin Mobile handset. A connected call is any call that you make that is answered, either by the recipient of your call or that individual's voice mail.

What's Changing?

As a result of changes in the way Virgin Mobile is charged for calls you make, we are now aligning our systems to start your call length from the moment you press the SEND button on your handset to initiate a call that is carried on our network. Previously, you were charged from the moment your call was connected. Virgin Mobile calls are billed by the minute, so we expect that the majority of our customers will not be impacted by this change in the cost of their average calls. We do not charge for usage on unanswered calls.

This one was to be expected as well. Less bang for the buck.

And finally:

Our $20 (250 minutes) monthly rate plan is now a limited time offer, available only until January 21th, 2007. But don't worry; if you've already signed up or if you sign up before the deadline, you can stay on it indefinitely.

Just make sure there's enough money in your account to cover each monthly payment by the due date. If you switch plans or miss a payment after January 21, 2007, you'll no longer have access to the $20 plan (250 minutes).

You know, everytime I hear about changes when it comes to Virgin Mobile, it seems it's always for the worst. So, what do you offer who's different, Virgin? 0.30$ per minute? Rogers/Fido does that. 15$ cards for 45 days? Solo does that for 20$ instead of 15$.

*shrugs* Whatever.

yeah, their advantages were very clear at first, but they're getting less and less so these days. wish they'd bring back those extended period topups again. that would win back my trust.

I agree.

Likely this was a planned strategy from the beginning: offer service for cheap and with the longest deadlines you could possibly find to hook as much people as possible, them then ram these changes up their throats.

The 90 days deadline on 25$ cards and 120 days on 50$ card still remains superior to the Big Four's offerings, but it pretty much just stops at that.

Fortunately, there are alternatives, and we have freedom of choice.

More changes. Starting on September 4th:

$15 - 30 days
$25 - 60 days
$50 - 60 days
$100 - 365 days

Except for the $100, this is a *carbon* copy of Bell prepaid, minus the decreasing rate and the SAF.
